ROAR EDITORIAL & DESIGN
Directed by Lindsay Seavert / Cinematography by Ben Garvin / Editorial & Design by Shane Nelson
Hoping this pass ise pretty close!
Adjusted the colors to pink on pink using the light pink from Chrysanthymum’s costume/hair. Made the Roar logo less hot pink and still dark to pop off pink backgound.
Did a pass with some minor re-edits, additons and added graphics, remixed audio and custom color (basically matching more contrasty look (but saved highlights and some other minor adjustments.
The main goal here is to come out of our next conversation using this design work to dial in a visual aesthetic that can be used across everything for the film. Posters, Trailers, Motion Graphics, Website, Etc.
GRAPHIC DESIGN / VISUAL IDENTITY
V2
I tend to think a bright color (ideally on the opposite side of color wheel) will help logo pop but it does look good color on color too.
The purple one below would look great with Red ROAR or Dark Orange.

Motion Graphics
This is what the pink on blue would look like but obviously can pick any color scheme you want. Pink on blue is as much emo punk color combo as GLBTQ+ but for sure understand if you want to stay away from pink entirely. Really you can pick any color combo you want.
Not loving the rounded corners on backers / feels less motivated than squared off “paper” edges but I do like the feathered backer on L3.
I also think this is better with the posterized half tone dots only subtley added in spots like transitions / credits etc.

Mood Board
The fur pattern seemed to be a great way to get in the curious clues but not showing or mentioning furries. Also like the idea of adding in a texture like Line screen or in this case color half tone vibe. Developed a logo direction with the fur texture and one without. I also like the AIA magazine cover and Marylin Monroe mug shot color executions but didnt explore them too much but could be an easy add to any of the work below.
Design Directions
Here are 3 design directions with 2 different logo executions. I created a few others but didn’t love them. (the high res downloads are linked in the project title)
Direction 1 works in the fuzzy logo and the idea that we are not fully seeing a furry outfit. I also like the idea that the shadows radiate some color like a pastel prism gag.
The Posterized Half Tone look conveys a sense of DIY and beautiful imperfection., We can make this any color combo you want but like how the pastel colors help the pink logo pop. We can also add titles and roles and distributor etc. on either side of TW logo.
I like the simple layout and lots more room for awards or other info if needed. The posterized haftone screen helps both the logo and (lower res) video screen grab look great even on a high res CMYK printed poster.
I like how the posterized half tone screen muddies the group shot so the furrys are not completely obvious and a chance to echo the pastel shadow and this zone becomes a backer for the slogan . (That tagline can be whatever you want).
2. This is all about simplicity with the furry fur creating a backdrop for the with plenty of space to add whatever other info may be needed and plenty of space to add laurels as the film racks up awards.
We could explore making the O a furry creature roaring if you like but I kind of liked the simplicity of a simple font and maybe some text like the tagline or descriptor like:
“A short film about community. “ or “A documentary on Furries.”
Threw in the line pattern from the mood board as a solid base to anchor the bottom and sort of motivate the red glow in the logo and it works well but nor sure it needs it. I might make the pink a bit lighter if we keep it. I also think it could be cool to fade in the color half tone posterized look from the bottom and in the purple outlikne of the logo but wanted to show one without that.
3. There are some ai sites that can create (low resolution) creatures like this. To me this represents the projection of what the Furry suit would look like if the furry was “real.”
This could also be a picture of one of the main characters in a “Roaring” pose if you have that or we can capture it. Again I like how the half tone dots dirty up the image just a bit and create a pattern once you look a little closer.
If we did use the low res ai generators we would probably need to add in SOME sort of texture for the posters and print stuff so it doesnt look blurry amateurish.
We could also adjust the lighting so we cant totally see the face on the Furry so its just a shape or even fill the shape with visuals from the film or something.
If none the above convepts are working, we may need to settle on a very specific style reference we can emulate. The “Brady Bunch” box gag from lower left corner of Mood Board always looks solid too as something we could explore if we found a specific existing poster or look you like . However the most important thing about this is simply picking the look and feel and make sure the logo execution is working so we can build in the motion graphics.
Picked the colors from the mood board but could be whatever you want. The only drawback of eliminating the color half tone (or other textured look) is that many of the 3840x2160 frames from the film tend to look a bit blurr
Motion Graphics
I tend to start with the poster before creating grahics as it can be nice for decision makers to see all the elements on one page and once approved I create the Motion Graphics.
If we use the fur logo this is a pretty playful intro. This film may not need long Opening Title Credits maybe only the logo.
I also would echo the half tone dots in the motion graphics.
This background has the fur moving around and the fur on fur works pretty well when the background has a half tone dot effect added.
We can go over the look and the physiscs moves etc. These would be on screen longer in the actual film and trailers etc so this is to discuss the things you like or dont like.
For example I might shift the style of this half tone to look less like an older tv screen.
When this look is approved I can add into the existing trailer and eventually finish the film.
