CONCEPT
Disco Ball Projection Idea
I love how old projectors create magic nostalgic visual that perfectly matches the tone of your music. I have had one specific idea for years that involves using a video projector
to cast light on existing structure, spaces and walls as IF the light flecks were from a disco ball…but they are actually being projected by a video projector.
As we follow the light flecks around the room… we can zoom in one one specific fleck grow to cover most of the room projecting actual video images of a romantic story playing out as the backgrounds pass by creating a trippy feel similar to this White Stripes music video but moving across the walls.
I have filmed other similar projection concepts several times for ESPN, Monday Night Football. and the band DoomTree (seen here) but ALWAYS wanted to do this disco ball projection concept and never quote found the right project til this music video. Also was thinking about how we used to go to Cheapskate and how fun that was…. so yeah…hope you and the band are into the idea.
TREATMENT
==============
0:00-0:15
A disco ball sparkles shooting beams of light everywhere as kids roller skate by. An akward teenage boy ties his roller skates. in a retro roller rink noticing a pretty girl skate by with her friends she looks directly at him and smiles.
0:16-0:45
He skates up to her and introduces himself confidently. She smiles and they skate around talking.
0:46-1:07
The girls friends tease them in background as they eat ice cream….but she ignores them and tells the boy a funny joke and they laugh as they skate. He reaches for her hand and she interlaces fingers as they skate by the friends who look indignant.
1:07-2:21
We track along with the youn gcouple focusing on the flecks of light on the wall in the background. Suddenly one of the flecks of light grows to fill the entire roller rink wall
with video scenes of the couple: On a date walking in a garden / kissing / arguing / crying hugging and making up.
2:22-3:20
We cut back to what appears to be the same disco ball from the roller rink but as we pull out we see that we are at the same young couples wedding.
They are almost 30 as they dance the camera again tracks along one of the flecks past white presents and again one light fleck grows showing images projected as we pass her white wedding dress, wedding cake projecting scenes of their life together:
Buying a house / Getting a dog / More arguing / Consoling eachother / Holding a baby
3:20-3:50
We flash back to the disco ball and again are back in the roller rink watching the young boy finish tying his rollerskates.
With a look of determination he skates up to the girl just like prior scene but this time….just before he can get to her her friends cut him off and start to tease him.
They dump their ice cream on his head and laugh as they skate away dismissively.
3:50-4:06
Undeterred the boy skates around the friends and rolls up to the girl in the exact same way as the prior scene but in this version his hair is covered in ice cream and sprinkles.
The girls friends are impressed and seem to relent. We cut back to the disco ball and…..
4:06—4:14
as we pull out the couple now in their 80s is still dancing together at an old folks home.
